IE, Clifford Chance and SCOR create the Center for Insurance Research

On July 4th, the signing of contracts took place which will give rise to the Center for Insurance Research (CIR), whose objective is to contribute to advance the knowledge of the insurance industry.

The ceremony was held in the Paper Pavillion of the IE with the participation of Salvador Carmona (IE University Rector), Rafael Puyol (IE Vicepresident of Institutional Relations) and the Center’s sponsors, represented by Jaime Velázquez (Managing Partner of Clifford Chance) and Diego Aragón (General Director of SCOR P&C Ibérica). The participants all expressed their conviction that the creation of the CIR is an essential venture and is a necessary response to the challenges presented by the current and future conditions in the insurance sector in the context of the global economy.

The Center was honored by the presence of some of the key figures representing institutions in the Spanish sector, in particular Mirenchu del Valle (General Secretary, UNESPA); Deputy Directors of the Dirección General de Seguros y Fondos de Pensiones, María Nuche (Deputy Director of Inspection), Margarita Pérez de Cárcamo (Deputy Director of Solvency) and Francisco Carrasco (Deputy Director of Regulation); Sergio Álvarez and Luis Pasquau (General Director and Investment Director of the Consorcio de Compensación de Seguros); José Boada and José Antonio Sánchez (President and General Director of ICEA, respectively); Ricardo Martínez and Carmen Cornejo (Managing Partners of Defensor del Asegurado); Carlos Alonso Fernández (Administrator of the Asociación de Peritos de Seguros and Comisarios de Averías) and Elena Jiménez de Andrade (President of the Colegio de Mediadores de Seguros).

This research initiative undertaken by the IE was announced on February 9th by Laura Núñez, Academic Director of the CIR, during a seminar on ‘The Impact of New Regulation on Insurance Company Management and Strategy’, organized by the IE and with the indispensable support of CIR sponsors, Clifford Chance and SCOR.

Clifford Chance, as the leading law firm in the insurance sector, will contribute a wide-raging legal vision. SCOR is the fourth most important reinsurer at a global level and this perspective on the global market will make a significant contribution to the Center.

The CIR Academic Director, Laura Núñez, together with the Executive Directors, Jorge Martínez and Ana Díez, have been working on the Project for over a year and a half and have welcomed the official commencement of the Center with enormous enthusiasm. The research Project areas will be announced in the coming months.
